Patience! How To Approach Goal Setting as a Breast Cancer Survivor
Aug 05, 2024Hey there, friends! Linda Dyson here. As a mom, grandmother, entrepreneur, and breast cancer survivor, I understand how our lives can shift dramatically after a diagnosis. Before breast cancer, I thrived on the challenge of setting goals and working tirelessly to achieve them. I felt inspired to dig deep, calling on my strongest attributes, especially when the goal seemed particularly difficult to achieve. I knew I was capable, determined, and focused, and that was enough to push me forward.
But after being diagnosed, something inside me changed. Fears crept in, and the bold Linda who could trust herself to push through any new project, big aspiration, or challenge seemed to disappear. It felt like not only my breasts were removed, but my courage and faith in myself were also cut off along with them.
How could I make a comeback after all I had been through?
Now, when setting goals, I make sure to be patient with myself. I assess my energy level and check in with my true priorities. It’s easy to get excited about achieving something important, but I remind myself that everything happens in its own time.
I take a realistic approach to goal-setting. I look introspectively at my situation and honestly identify the factors that could prevent me from achieving my goal in the time I want. I accept these opposing factors and develop a game plan to conquer them.
I find it easier to achieve my goals when I break them down into tangible pieces. This approach allows me to exercise patience as I focus on smaller steps to success. I also maintain my patience by setting a realistic timeline for completing each step.
Today, I know that my goals are within reach because I have an effective strategy for achieving them. I am both capable and deserving of the goodness of life. With patience, I am certain that I can make progress, in due time.
Self-Reflection Questions:
- Can outside factors affect my self-confidence and cause me to doubt my ability to achieve a goal?
- What strengths have I discovered in myself since my diagnosis?
- Am I doing anything that gets in the way of achieving a goal?
- How can I align my goals with my true priorities to ensure they are meaningful and achievable?
- What steps can I take to maintain my motivation and focus while being patient with myself?
Remember, friends, embracing patience in our goal-setting process is crucial. It’s about understanding our new reality and adjusting our strategies to fit our current needs and strengths. Let’s continue to support each other on this journey.
Huge hugs & strength,
Linda Dyson
